When I started at UCC, our cubicles were in a rectangle and our boss had a full office.  Shortly after that, we moved in with the R&D department because supporting them was part of our mandate.  The offices where all in a U shape surrounding a large open area.  Our boss now had a large cubicle.

Nearby, there was a drafting room with about 30 draftsmen at drawing tables.  The engineers and designers made sketches and markups for the drafting department who created the final drawings.

Office hours were stringently maintained, with start, breaks and end times being controlled by alarms.  The rare occasions of overtime were planned well in advance.  Part of this was because so many of us were in car-pools and therefore had to make sure we were all arriving and leaving at the same time.
